Dept. of Community & Family Medicine

The Section of Community Medicine comprises a team of Internationally trained faculty members who are motivated and geared to contribute to the mainstream public health in Pakistan and have a positive impact on the lives of the people of Pakistan. Our guiding principle is; “Equitable public health measures have great impact on lives.” The focus is to produce doctors who are fully oriented with the public health problems of Pakistan and are willing to bring positive change in the public health scenario in Pakistan, with particular reference to the underprivileged and marginalized communities of the country. The main focus of the curriculum spread over all five years is to apprise and train the students about the preventive strategies and interventions that could reduce the occurrence of disease, increase life expectancy, improve quality of life and decrease mortality. These preventive strategies are applicable at the community level and result in decreased expenditures on curative treatment of advanced diseases and overall favorable effect on the health of the community. The Section also strives to keep the students of SCM apprised of the public health problems globally, so that they could become well-rounded doctors.

The modules run by the section include; Public Health Practice, Research project programme, and Public health electives, in addition to teaching of preventive aspects within all system based modules. The students work in the designated communities and get a feel of working at the primary health care level. The goal of Research project programme is to inculcate the faculty of critical thinking and making the students independent and life-long learners.

In order to inculcate the sense of contribution to the community early in the career, welfare activities are strongly supported and promoted by the faculty members of Community Health Sciences with active involvement of the students. ‘Helping hands for cancer patients’(http://hhcancer.blogspot.com) is a student body supported by the faculty which organizes regular events to raise funds for the deserving and needy cancer patients of ‘Shifa Foundation Falahee Clinic.’ Cancer awareness raising campaign among the masses is routinely undertaken.
